Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Cairns .

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Cairns Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

I really enjoyed this class with Nicko, it was very informative and I now have more knowledge on Aperture, Shutter Speeds and Exposure which I am now putting into practice. It was great to be out and about rather than a classroom situation.

Niko was very good with his instruction. Next time I would go a more intermediate level for myself. But it was nice to meet new people and see others I had met before. Maybe the new beginners should do a beginners class first to understand basic functions and terminologies.

Well organised, great resources and a positive environment for learning. Brit was friendly and helpful towards all attendees and managed the group well. Understanding the use of filters and engagement with the portrait subject was particularly useful.

I have a reasonable amount of experience in photography, I found the host to be knowledgeable, she had the short 2 hrs time frame planned out quite well. I was able to pick up a few tips that I can utilize. I went there to get the feel for how the groups are run mainly, as I intend to run some in the future myself for cairns photography group.

What a great tutorial on portrait photography by Brit Ehlers the step by step instructions were very well presented with visual aids and clear communication. Splitting us in small groups to practice was very helpful also the resources Brit provided made for very practical applications for the tasks. Thoroughly enjoyed the session Brit showed a good depth of knowledge on the subject. Highly recommended!

Wilderness landscapes are Paul's passion and he moved himself to far north Queensland to 1984 to pursue his goal of having the best photo library in that part of the world. He was attracted to the countryside around Cairns which has everything from pristine, golden beaches devoid of footprints to permanently damp mountain tops with views over unspoiled wilderness and wild trackless rivers, to the dry sandstone and basalt escarpment country west of the ranges. Come and share his experiences and knowledge in a field-based situation and be challenged to see the local environment through your camera viewfinder in a new way with support ready at hand to guide you to achieving a satisfying image.

I am a passionate photographic artist and educator with a deep love for visual storytelling and creative expression. As an Internationally published artist, with close to 30 years of experience behind the camera and in the classroom, I specialise in helping students build both technical confidence and artistic vision. My teaching covers everything from camera fundamentals and lighting to composition, editing, portraiture, and commercial photography.

I believe great photography is about more than settings and equipment. It is about learning to see the world differently. My classes are designed to be hands-on, encouraging, and accessible for photographers at every skill level. Whether students are picking up a camera for the first time or refining a professional portfolio, I aim to create an environment that inspires creativity, curiosity, and personal growth.

Through practical projects and real-world techniques, I help students develop their own unique style while mastering the skills needed to capture meaningful, impactful images.

One of my favourite stops on my morning walks. Cyclone Narelle made landfall in North Queensland a few days after I took this shot. It was a category 5 with immense powers. Luckily, it stayed North of more densely populated areas. Cairns was extremely fortunate once again.Sadly, the wind and the waves did severe damage to the beaches. The soil and sand underneath the slab washed into the ocean. It slipped into the beach below and had to be removed. I will miss it.

I use photography to help with my mental health and I love capturing the Chimpanzees and most primates due to how expressive they are. Many of my images that I post (like this one) are to represent how I am feeling at that moment in time.

This is a shot of one of the many species (over 300 types in the uk) of long legged fly. These are predatory and this particular one is about 5mm long. Shot taken with a lumix g9 and 45mm macro lens using a flash and diffuser. Ive loved bugs my whole life and recently switched to macro due to the smaller gear and my ill health stopping me carrying larger gear. I love that there is a whole world in a bush.
